The story is a work of historical nonfiction unlike no other. Sands weaves the story of his grandfather with the histories of the two men, Hersch Lauterpacht and Rafael Lemkin, who coined world-changing legal concepts: “crimes against humanity” and “genocide,” respectively.
I was drawn to the book for two reasons: one, I didn't know the story of Greece during WWII, and two, I didn't know what a lamenter did...
Enchanted Islands is loosely based on the life of Frances Conway, a woman married to a naval intelligence officer sent to the Galápagos Islands to spy on the Germans during World War II.
