Evvie Drake Stars Over
Evvie Drake is about to leave her abusive husband when she gets a call from the hospital, telling her there’s been an accident and she needs to go there immediately. And suddenly he’s dead, and she doesn’t know how to mourn him.
The story begins a year later — when Evvie is still unsure how to process her grief, and her best friend, Andy, suggests she rent out the apartment in her house to his friend, Dean. Dean is a professional baseball player, a pitcher, but he’s suffering from the “yips.” (The yips are “the loss of fine motor skills in athletes. The condition occurs suddenly and without apparent explanation, usually in mature athletes with years of experience. It is poorly understood and has no known treatment or therapy.”) When Dean moves in, they decide they won’t discuss Dean’s baseball career or Evvie’s husband.
I love how the book is teased: “a heartfelt debut about the unlikely relationship between a young woman who’s lost her husband and a major league pitcher who’s lost his game.” It was heartfelt! And romantic! And such a wonderful summer read! Evvie Drake Starts Over is Linda Holmes’s debut novel (you may know her as host of NPR’s Pop Culture Happy Hour), and a very fun — albeit a little predictable — read!!
