The Heir Affair

The Heir Affair

Once you start The Heir Affair, be prepared to not be able to put it down. Seriously. This book is addictive in all the best ways. Like many, I have been waiting for Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan’s highly anticipated sequel to The Royal We

In their first novel, American Bex Porter falls for Nick, the British prince who is in line to the throne, and drama ensues. (It was actually based more loosely on Kate & Will than Meghan & Harry, FYI). After a scandal turns their fairy tale into a nightmare, Bex and Nick have to deal with the fallout. That’s where The Heir Affair begins, but then it turns into so much more than that — Cocks and Morgan have crafted a delicious story of complicated families, it’s just that this one happens to be royal.

Here’s my favorite bit from an interview they did with Vogue:

You wrote The Heir Affair before Harry and Meghan resigned as royals, but the book starts with Nick and Bex in self-imposed exile, escaping from the monarchy and masquerading as normal people. The Royal We was about an American woman marrying into the royal family. Are you two clairvoyant?

Morgan: Heather and I sometimes joke that maybe our next book needs to be about a brilliant scientist who cures a pandemic in two weeks, or some woman runs for president and sweeps the nation with a stunning electoral victory.

Cocks: The whole time that we were working on The Heir Affair, and then after we turned it in, we were like, ‘Nobody’s going to believe that we had written most of this stuff before Megan and Harry left England.’ But if we were to totally change the plot at that point, our publisher would murder us in our beds. The Royal We was less a book that we wrote because we are Kate and Will mega-fans and more because we were like, ‘She became the most famous woman in the world overnight. There’s no way this was that easy.’ Of course, the same thing happened to Meghan Markle.

If you haven’t read The Royal We yet, go read that, then read this. You won’t regret it, I promise.
